Studying Double Bass

🎻 Studying Double Bass – From Passion to Profession

Teaching and mentoring young musicians is an integral part of my artistic journey. As a professor at Mozarteum University Salzburg, I focus on developing technical excellence, interpretative depth, and a strong sense of artistic responsibility, empowering students to take ownership of their musical expression and professional growth.

Today’s orchestral world presents both challenges and exciting new opportunities. My goal is to help students build the skills, confidence, and adaptability they need to shape their own artistic paths and succeed professionally.

A Path to Professional Excellence

  • Mastery & Artistic Identity - Secure technique, interpretative refinement, and stylistic awareness
  • Orchestral Preparation - Focused audition training and in - depth repertoire studies
  • Personal & Artistic Growth - Encouraging independence, flexibility, and a strong artistic identity
  • Chamber Music & Collaboration - Engaging with top-level musicians in ensemble projects

Mastering the Double Bass – Technique, Expression & Artistry

I provide my students with a solid technical foundation, the tools for a rich and nuanced tone, and a deep understanding of the double bass repertoire. A key aspect of my teaching is the awareness of physical and physiological connections in playing, ensuring a sustainable and healthy technique.

My assistant, Andrew Eunki Lee, Co-Principal Double Bassist in Wuppertal, offers specialized coaching in sight-reading and technical refinement for orchestral and solo repertoire.

Through this approach, my students successfully secure positions in leading orchestras worldwide, shaping the future of music with skill, passion, and artistic identity.

Rhodius Academy

🎻 The International Rhodius Academy for Double Bass – A Premier Masterclass for Double Bass

Every two years in July, the International Rhodius Academy Masterclasses bring together exceptional young double bassists and world-renowned soloists at the historic Burg Namedy in Germany. Over the course of five intensive days, 20 selected students receive individual lessons from each master, participate in public masterclasses, concerts, and specialized workshops, and engage in inspiring presentations and discussions.

Our mission is to nurture outstanding young talent, provide fresh artistic perspectives, expand international networks, and elevate the role of the double bass on the concert stage. Scholarships are available, and instruments can be provided upon request.

A Unique Learning Experience in an Inspiring Setting

Founded in 2017 by the Manfred and Rosemarie Rhodius Foundation, the Academy is artistically directed by internationally acclaimed double bassist Christine Hoock. More than just a place of learning, it is a vibrant space for connection, collaboration, and artistic growth.

Nestled in the stunning Rhine Valley, Burg Namedy provides a truly unique and inspiring atmosphere. Under the patronage of the Princesses of Hohenzollern, this historic venue offers an extraordinary setting for music and artistic exchange.
